Vacation

Posted by Wendy on Saturday Jul 9, 2011 Under Parenting

Yup we’ve been away on vacation, so I thought I’d pass along some of my money saving ideas for a great vacation.  My last posts on vacation savings are still getting comments and questions so I thought it might make a good topic.

We vacation differently than some people since most of our family live near us, so we don’t go away to visit family.  Our goal is to visit all 50 states so we never go the same place twice, or at least we try not to repeat places.  And that is why this year we ended up in Chicago.  Just a place we’ve never been to before, within a reasonable driving distance, with LOTS of museums and things to see and do.

In fact there is so much to do here we’ve made it a two week vacation to make the drive here worthwhile(10hrs).    Part of why it’s a good choice for a budget vacation is that we can go to nearly every museum for free with the use of our membership card from the Rochester Museum and Science Center.  I always encourage friends to join the science museum and the zoo because they are part of a group of museums that allow members in for free or at a discount just by showing their ID card.  Some of the places we are able to get in free include The Field Museum, famous for Sue, the T-rex skeleton, Adler Planetarium, Lincoln Park Zoo, Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, and the Chicago Children’s Museum.  And on top of all that your membership is tax deductible.

Of course being in a big city makes parking VERY expensive!  So we are staying outside of the city and driving to a L-train station and using public transport to get around.  But even that can add up so to help keep those costs down you need to buy multiple day passes which let you ride the train and buses unlimited for up to 7 days at a time.

But our favorite thing to keep costs down that we have discovered over the years is to find an affordable rental house.  I think the first time we discovered this is when our kids were just toddlers.  Trying to get everyone to settle down and go to sleep in a tiny hotel room, every night, was no vacation!  So one year when researching vacations we decided to go to Mystic Seaport, CT and I found a beach cottage for a week rental with 3 bedrooms for $1000 a week during the summer!  In all honesty that is the most we’ve ever paid for a rental, usually we find something like where we are at for only $500-600 a week.  Stick with me, that does sound expensive, but when you compare it to hotel rates it’s a bargain.  And the place we are staying at has 2 BR, 1 Ba, living room, dining room, equipped kitchen, and a whole basement for the kids to play in.  I brought all our breakfast food and meals I made ahead and froze, so we only have to pay for lunches out, and all I have to do is reheat our dinners so there’s little work making meals for me.  So we end up saving lots of money on food.  Plus we all sleep so much better in own rooms, and having space to move around without tripping over one another.

Interested?  Here are some places to start your vacation home rental search:

www.vrbo.com

www.vacationrentals.com

www.homeaway.com

Or if you just google vacation home rental and the location you are looking at you can find some great deals.  Last fall we went to Disney World and because it was off season we were able to rent a 4 br, 3ba house with a pool and hot tub for only $500 a week!  We shared it with our in-laws which also helped bring down costs.  Another tip is if you are in a place like a beach area that is driven by summer tourism you can look into realtor companies, lots of them also rent vacation homes for the summer.

For the next 8 hours you have the opportunity to purchase a 4 pack of admissions for half off for the Jump Club.  They can be used over multiple trips, so like I only have 2 kids so I’ll take the kids twice.  To get your discount admission check out RochesterPerks

Jump Club has a number of inflatables, along with a great area for younger kids to play with toys.  They also have THE best lounge area for parents out of all the kid places in Rochester, nice cushy couches and tables and chairs.  My girls really enjoy going there for a few hours.  My tip for your kids is to wear pants cause kids can get “rug burn” if they aren’t careful on the slides.  Never been to Jump Club?   Then here is some important info:

New Play area at Marketplace Mall now open

Posted by Wendy on Tuesday May 24, 2011 Under Parenting

There is a brand new play area that has just opened at Marketplace Mall in Henrietta, NY.  If you shop there you may have noticed the construction going on for a while and wondering what was going on.  They took out one of the old fountains and replaced it with the cooshiest carpeting and a number of soft sculptures for the young kids to climb and play on.

I’m not a big fan of shopping at the mall, but I do take my car to Sears every 3 months to get it’s oil changed.  It may be a few bucks more expensive but the ability to walk through the mall with my children while waiting for the car to be looked at is well worth the couple of dollars.  We have always made an afternoon of it going to Friendly’s for ice cream and then to Robin’s Pet Corner to see the baby puppies.  Such fun compared to sitting in a greasy mechanics shop trying to keep the kids quiet.

Now there is an added incentive to go to the mall.  A FREE play area for young kids.  I remember being so excited when Irondequoit Mall opened their play area, but was disappointed to find that they charged money for kids to play in it!  I love how colorful it is, and all the sculptures are based on New York state themes, such as the beaver being the NYS animal, and the lilac being the NYS bush.  My girls absolutely love it.

There are a few rules to go along with the play area to keep everyone safe.

Play Area Rules and Regulations

Children must be under 42″ in height to use the play area.

Remove shoes before playing.

No food or drinks allowed.

Children are not to be left unattended – adult supervision is required at all times.

The Marketplace Mall does not provide child supervision of the play area.

Please use inside voices while playing.  No shouting.

Please play politely and be respectful of others.

Use play area at your own risk.

Please do not run, jump or climb on the surrounding benches.

The Marketplace Mall reserves the right to dismiss children from the play area who are in violation of these rules.

Have fun!

Sign ups start now for Pizza Hut’s Book it program

Posted by Wendy on Saturday May 7, 2011 Under Events

Do you have a Pizza Hut in your area? The you might want to look into their ‘BOOK IT!’ reading program for grades K-6! Homeschoolers are allowed to participate too! Here’s some information from their website:

Simple
BOOK IT! runs every school year from October through March.  The teacher sets a reading goal for each child in the class.  A tracking chart and reproducibles are included to make it that much easier.  As soon as a child meets the monthly reading goal, the teacher gives him or her a Reading Award Certificate.

Flexible
BOOK IT! goals are based on reading ability.  Number of books, number of pages, or number of minutes – they all work.  BOOK IT! can also be used with the reading curriculum or as support for comprehension or intervention programs.  For children not reading independently, the goal can be set where a parent or others read to the child.

Fun
Pizza Hut is proud of all BOOK IT! readers!  The restaurant manager and team congratulate every child for meeting the monthly reading goal and reward them with a free, one-topping Personal Pan Pizza, BOOK IT! card and backpack clip.

If you want to learn more about the BOOK IT! program, you can follow this link. Enrollment for homeschoolers has begun and is open until the end of June.
